Summer Is Upon Us…
With longer days and slower rhythms, summer is the perfect time to pause and be intentional. This year, I created a summer reading challenge for my stepdaughter. She’s turning 13 at the end of the season, stepping into her teenage years, and I wanted to mark this transition with more than just a birthday cake and a card.
I wanted to give her something that would challenge her heart. Something that would help her stand firm in God’s truth. Something that would shape how she enters this next chapter of life.
So I chose the book Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris.
My prayer is that this book helps her stand apart from the noise of culture and grow into the kind of young woman who chooses obedience over ease. A teenager who knows her worth in Christ and isn’t afraid to rise above low expectations.
What Is Do Hard Things?
Do Hard Things is written for teens who are ready to rise to something higher. It challenges the idea that adolescence is just a waiting room for adulthood, and instead calls young people to live boldly for God right now.
This book encourages teens to:
- Step out of their comfort zones
- Make intentional choices that reflect their faith
- Take on meaningful responsibility
- Use their voice and energy for good
It’s not about hustle or perfection, but about living with purpose.
Why I Created the Companion Journal
To help my stepdaughter really process what she was reading, I created a journal to go along with the book. Something simple, reflective, and faith-centered. A place to think, pray, and respond.
I created it just for her, but I realized that this can be meaningful for other families too.
The Summer Reading Challenge: Do Hard Things Companion Journal is now available on Etsy. Inside, teens will find:
- Chapter-based reflection prompts
- Scripture woven throughout
- Thoughtful space for journaling
- A peaceful, modern layout designed to keep the focus on God
This journal is ideal for summer reading, intentional mornings, or even as part of a homeschool rhythm.

You don’t have to be an expert to raise a strong teen—you just have to be present. To care. To keep showing up.
This summer, I hope you’ll join me in doing something intentional. Let’s use these months not just for rest, but for planting seeds of courage and conviction that will last for years to come.
